Treatment techniques
There are many treatment techniques that physiotherapists use in order to treat and rehabilitate people and animals. Many of these techniques and skills are transferrable and can be used on both people and animals to treat musculoskeltal complaints.

Below is a list of treatment techniques that I use in order to ensure that the most effective and evidence based treatment is delivered:
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Ultrasound can be used to treat soft tissue injuries. It introduces energy into the body through a process called cavitation. This improves the circulation to the local tissue which can speed up the healing process. It is used to treat both humans and animals with a portable ultrasound machine.
Kinesiotaping
Kinesiotape is mainly used on people and is effective for treating anything from headaches to foot problems and everything in between. It gives support and stability to the joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of movement. It can also be used for preventative treatment and oedema control. Kinesiotape can also be used on horses as an oedema control but also as a method of pain relief.
Joint mobilisations
These are passive movements of joints performed by a physiotherapist aimed at increasing joint mobility and decreasing pain. This is a very effective treatment techniques used in both humans and animals.
Therapeutic massage
Massage therapy encompasses many different techniques used on muscles and other soft tissues. It has been proven to increase joint flexibility, improve posture and circulation, decrease stress and improve tissue extensibility.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release is a specialised manual therapy technique used for the effective treatment and rehabiitation of soft tissue and fascial tension and restrictions. It can be performed on both humans and animals in different ways.
Exercise prescription
Muscles can become tight or weak for various reasons and therefore muscle imbalance occurs. In people, the cause of this is mainly occupational. In animals this mainly occurs because we domesticate them. It is important that muscle balance is restored in order to stay injury free.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
This is a form of electrotherapy used on both humans and horses. It involves the application of electrical stimuli to a group of muscles to cause a muscle contraction subsequently aiding with rehabilitation. Unlike humans, it is difficult to get an animal to activate one muscle group at a time, therefore rehabilitative exercises tend to be more holistic. NMES enables a single muscle group in a horse to be worked which has a much greater effect.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is only used to treat humans. It is often used to treat pain conditions such as headaches, back pain and generalised arthritis. However it can be used to treat pretty much any complaint. It involves inserting fine needles into the skin. This activates the body's sensory nerves which results in the body producing pain-relieving substances, such as endorphins. Acupuncture is normally delivered in 4-6 sessions over a period of 4 weeks and sessions normally last approximately 30 minutes.
